Volunteer Spotlight: Kate LaRouche

Some volunteers leave a lasting impression simply by being themselves. Kate LaRouche is one of those people.

Kate's patient and gentle demeanour brings a sense of calmness and security to Merrymount's ADHD groups, allowing children to connect with her with ease. Participants look forward to seeing Kate each week because they know she will listen with care and make them feel supported.

As a volunteer co-facilitator, Kate is dedicated to helping every child get the most out of the program. She consistently shares thoughtful ideas and suggestions to support each child's individual needs, making a meaningful difference to both the children and the group as a whole.

In recognition of her outstanding contributions, Kate was presented with the 2026 Ailene Wittstein Legacy Award at Merrymount's Annual General Meeting. This award honours a volunteer whose dedication has made an exceptional impact.

From what inspired her to volunteer to the moments that have made the biggest impact, here's what Kate had to say about her experience at Merrymount.

Can you tell us a little about your educational background?

I just finished my third year at Western University, where I’m studying Psychology.

What inspired you to volunteer with Merrymount?

I’ve always enjoyed working with children, and I’ve also volunteered with other mental health organizations in the community. When I learned about Merrymount and the work they do supporting children and families, I knew it was the kind of work I would really care about and enjoy doing. Since I want to work with children in my future career, volunteering in a space where I could help children and gain meaningful experience felt like a perfect fit.

What does your role as a volunteer in the ADHD group involve?

During group, I help support my amazing group facilitator, Holly O’Neill, with a small group of children around 6–9 years old who have ADHD. Together, we help the children learn more about ADHD, talk about how it may affect their daily lives, and teach strategies that can help make things more manageable at school and at home. We use books, educational videos, games, and crafts to help the children better understand themselves while also building confidence and important life skills in a fun and supportive environment.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering with Merrymount?

My favourite part of the work is getting to build connections with the children and seeing them become more comfortable and confident over time. I really enjoy creating a positive environment where they feel understood, supported, and able to express themselves. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that even small moments of encouragement or understanding can make a meaningful difference in a child’s life.

Is there anything else you'd like to share about your volunteer experience?

Volunteering with Merrymount has been a very meaningful experience for me. It has strengthened my passion for working with children and reminded me how important supportive spaces and positive role models can be. I’m very grateful to have had the opportunity to be part of such a caring and welcoming community.

We are incredibly grateful for everything Kate brings to Merrymount and the children and families we serve.
