Moments That Stay With Me ~ Michelle Franklin, Merrymount Executive Director
Michelle Franklin, our Executive Director, reflects on the small, everyday moments that show why Merrymount’s work is so important: supporting children through the challenging days and celebrating the brighter ones.
“The absolute highlight of my workday is walking through the dining room each morning for a coffee and seeing the children who stayed overnight laughing and chatting over breakfast before heading off to school. Some mornings I’m greeted with a high five, a hug - once, I even received a plastic chain necklace that hung down to my knees.
Of course, not every morning is lighthearted. Sometimes I see a child with their head down on the table or withdrawn from others. Those quiet moments - the ones that break your heart just a little - are the ones that remind me why Merrymount’s work is so important. We’re here to walk alongside children through the hard days and to celebrate the brighter ones; and that support can make all the difference.
Although I know that children must be experiencing, or at risk of experiencing, a mental health crisis to be eligible for our services, I don’t always know the specific circumstances that bring each child to Merrymount. But it truly warms my heart to know we are there for them when they need it most. I believe wholeheartedly in Merrymount’s mission, vision, and values, and my monthly donation is one small way I can support the vital services we provide to children and families.
I feel incredibly privileged to serve as Executive Director of such a remarkable organization and continue to be in awe of the impact Merrymount has in our community. I see it every single morning - and it inspires me every day.”
