Volunteer Spotlight: Sara
So much of what we do at Merrymount is possible thanks to the wonderful people who choose to generously share their time, energy, and talents with us.
Among them is Sara, who volunteers with us at events and community booths. Her friendly presence and willingness to get involved are always appreciated, and we’re so grateful for the time she shares with us. We’re excited to introduce Sara and share a little more about her experience at Merrymount.
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
Hello! My name is Sara, and I’m from Sudan. I moved to London 12 years ago and have really grown to love the city and the community here.
I’d say I’m a really curious person. I love learning about people and understanding what makes them who they are, which is a big part of why I studied psychology. I’m also someone who can be a little competitive, but more in the sense that when I find something I enjoy, I like to be intentional about it and challenge myself to get better.
I’ve always been interested in working with youth, and volunteering with Merrymount has motivated me to continue working toward that goal and to find more ways to support and connect with young people.
What inspired you to get involved with Merrymount?
I first heard of Merrymount through a family member who works there. I was looking to volunteer with organizations that supported the wellbeing of families and children, and was really inspired by Merrymount’s dedication to create a supportive environment for families. I feel incredibly grateful to be able to contribute to an organization that brings hope and support to families when they need it most.
Is there a moment from your volunteer work that’s really stuck with you?
Absolutely! There were many moments that stuck with me, but I would say the one that stands out the most happened while volunteering at the Merrymount booth during the Kiwanis Kite Festival. Some of the children came to play Jenga with me at our booth, and we ended up playing and talking for hours. The kids never minded whether they won or knocked all the pieces down, and I got so many laughs from the things they said and did. It was such a rewarding and wholesome experience. :)
What does being part of the Merrymount community mean to you?
It feels incredible to be a part of the Merrymount community. Between meeting amazing people, knowing you’re doing something good, and realizing that your body and mind can fuel meaningful change, it has entirely changed how I feel about myself and what I’m capable of.
What would you say to someone considering volunteering?
I would say to just go for it. Hope doesn’t have to be this passive feeling. Hope can be turned into action, and every action we take, even when small, matters and builds momentum for the next, bigger action. You might not always see the impact of what you’re doing right away, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Volunteer because you never know how something as simple as showing up might make a difference to someone else.
Is there anything else you'd like to share? We're all ears!
I just wanted to say that, with Merrymount, I went in with a smiling face and came out with a smiling face and a very content heart. I feel like I am truly making a difference in children’s lives, even in the smallest ways, and that I am contributing to Merrymount’s mission. It’s a really special feeling to know that something as simple as showing up, being present, and sharing a few laughs can mean something to someone else.
