Volunteer Spotlight: Maili Walker

The 2025 Golf Classic wouldn’t have been the same without volunteers like Maili Walker. On June 24 at FireRock Golf Club, she brought warmth, energy, and a helping hand to every moment.

We had the chance to speak with Maili about her experience, what inspires her to volunteer, and what stood out most from the event. Here’s what she had to say:

What inspired you to get involved with Merrymount? How did you first hear of us?

One day I saw a posting online that Merrymount was looking for volunteers for their Golf Classic, and I immediately wanted to help out. I had already heard of Merrymount from being a London local and I really admire the work they do to support children and families in the community. I knew it would be a meaningful way to give back, and I was excited to be part of something so impactful!

What’s something you’ve learned through volunteering?

Volunteering has taught me a lot, and I’ve learned how much of a difference small moments of kindness and support can make in someone’s day, especially for kids. Even just showing up with a smile and being present can go a long way.

Is there a moment from your volunteer work that’s really stuck with you?

One moment that really stuck with me wasn’t a single interaction, but more so the overall feeling of teamwork and collaboration throughout the day. I was so impressed by how everyone cared deeply about their role and took pride in contributing to the day. Every person, no matter what they were doing, played an important part in making the day run smoothly, and you could really feel that unity in action

What did being part of the Merrymount community for the day mean to you?

From the moment I arrived, I felt genuinely so welcomed and included by the Merrymount team. It's so clear that everyone involved shares a deep passion for the work being done. The energy, care, and commitment of the team were so inspiring, and you could feel the heart behind everything.

What was your favourite part of event day?

Honestly, my favourite part of the day was getting to meet so many wonderful people, both from the Merrymount team and the attendees. Everyone was so kind, welcoming, and genuinely happy to be there. There was such a positive atmosphere, and it was really uplifting to be surrounded by people who were all coming together to support a great cause.

What would you say to someone considering volunteering?

Do it (especially if you had extra time-off like I did - haha)! It’s such a rewarding way to spend your time, you get to meet so many amazing people and you’ll walk away with new experiences that you won't get unless you put yourself out there.

If there’s anything else you’d like to share, we’re all ears!

Just a big thank you to the Merrymount team for everything you do and for letting me be part of it! Special shoutout to Evan for all his hard work coordinating everything, it was a pleasure working with him! 😄
